No. There is no sign-up, no email address and no password. Download the app and start adding boxes straight away. Your inventory syncs through your own iCloud account, which you are already signed into.

Yes, with limits. The free plan holds 3 boxes with one photo each, which is enough to see whether the app suits you. Limited raises that to 10 boxes with unlimited photos. Unlimited removes the box limit entirely and adds item photos, backup and restore. Everything else is free on every plan: scanning, QR codes, label printing, PDF and CSV inventory reports, tags, reminders, warranties, widgets and iCloud sync. Current prices for your country are on the App Store page.

iPhone and iPad running iOS 17.6 or later. There is no Android version and no web app, and a Mac app is not available yet.

On your device, and in your own iCloud account. SmartBox runs no servers of its own for your content, so your photos and your inventory never pass through anyone else's system. Syncing is handled by Apple and protected by their encryption. Nothing about your boxes is shared with us or with anyone else unless you choose to share it yourself.

Yes. Adding boxes, adding items, searching, scanning labels and printing all work offline, because everything is stored on your device. Your changes sync to your other devices the next time you are online. The one exception is the photo analysis feature, which sends the photo to an AI service and needs a connection.

No, they are optional and the app is perfectly usable without them. If you do print them you get the useful part: scan a label with your phone and the box's contents appear instantly, without unstacking or opening anything. You can print sheets of labels on A4 or Letter paper, or onto die-cut sticker sheets, using one of eight ready-made designs or a layout you design yourself.

Yes. If a box already carries a shipping label, a retail barcode or a warehouse code, you can link that existing code to the box instead of adding a SmartBox label. Scan it once to assign it, and from then on scanning it opens the box. SmartBox reads QR codes plus EAN-8, EAN-13, Data Matrix, PDF417, Aztec, Code 128, Code 39, Code 93, ITF and UPC-E.

Yes. Photograph the box while it is still open and SmartBox can suggest a name, a description, a list of the items it can see, and matching tags. It only fills in fields you left empty, so it never overwrites anything you wrote yourself. The feature is free on every plan and needs an internet connection.

Yes, in two ways. A public QR code shows a box's contents to anyone who scans it, even if they do not have the app, because the details are stored inside the code itself rather than on a server. Or export a PDF or CSV inventory of everything, which is what most people send to movers or an insurance company. What is not possible is a shared inventory that two people edit together, since sync is private to your own iCloud account.

Yes. Every plan can export a full inventory as a PDF report or as a CSV spreadsheet that opens in Numbers or Excel. The Unlimited plan adds a complete backup file containing every box, item, tag and photo, which you can keep wherever you like and restore later.

The app has a built-in help guide covering every screen, and on iPhones that support Apple Intelligence there is a support chat that answers questions about the app and runs entirely on your device.
